FORMER FIREFIGHTER
SHERMAN STRICKLAND
ROCK HILL FIRE DEPARTMENT

Article published in Webster-Kirkwood Times February 27, 2015

Rock Hill Mayor Edward Mahan read a proclamation during the Feb. 17 board of aldermen meeting honoring Sherman Strickland, the city's first African-American firefighter.

Strickland, who died Jan. 15, was born in Mississippi, then as a child moved to Hayti, Mo., with his family. After graduating from Vashon High School, he served in the Vietnam War and, upon return his return, moved to Rock Hill.

His friend, Rock Hill police officer Leon Whitner, along with Rock Hill Fire Chief Harold Stroud, encouraged him to apply for a position as a Rock Hill fire fighter. He served the city from 1975 until 1979 when he left to become a bus driver for Bi-State, frequently driving the route through Rock Hill. Strickland is the only black firefighter to have ever served in Rock Hill.

He was known as a jack-of-all-trades. He was popular with children for not only repairing their bicycles, but for offering fatherly advice when needed. He shared his skills as a volunteer with the Special School District, making bird cages with the students.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Connie, who lives in Rock Hill. Strickland's children are: Michael, also of Rock Hill; Robert Dunn, Cleveland, Ohio; Eddie and Angela White, St. Louis; Devora Brown, Centerville, Ill.; Lavonda Thompson, Atlanta, Ga.; and Sherwin Strickland Pullen, Kennedale, Texas.
